The Move Your Money project is a nonprofit campaign that encourages individuals and institutions to divest from the nation’s largest Wall Street banks and move to local financial institutions. Little has changed to prevent another financial crisis or to end ‘Too Big To Fail,’ and with Congress unwilling to act, we are encouraging individuals to take power into their own hands by voting with their dollars and no longer contributing to a financial system that has lead our country astray. We are a campaign that gives people real, concrete actions they can take to create a more sane, stable and localized banking system.

My name is Kelly Schomburg, I’m the girl with the red hair in these pictures. I was protesting at the Occupy Wall Street march yesterday when I and several other women were sprayed with mace and subsequently arrested. Many have already seen the video, which has been spreading like wildfire over twitter, Facebook, tumblr, and other video feeds, along with hundreds of other photos and videos. This is my recount of what happened.

But the detour, too, was closed, leaving us only one other option: straight down Broadway. The lighthearted carnival air begins to get very heavy as it becomes clear that we are being corralled. The main group, about 150 protesters, keeps on down the street, but the police are running behind with the orange nets, siphoning off groups of fifteen to twenty people at a time, classic crowd control.

A new group of police officers arrives in white shirts, as opposed to dark blue. These guys are completely undiscerning in their aggression. If someone gets in their way, they shove them headfirst into the nearest parked car, at which point the officers are immediately surrounded by camera phones and shouts of “Shame! Shame!”

Up until this point, Frank and I have managed to stay ahead of the nets, but as we hit what I think is 12th Street, they’ve caught up. The blue-shirts aren’t being too forceful, so we manage to run free, but stay behind to see what happens. Then things go nuts.

The white-shirted cops are shouting at us to get off the street as they corral us onto the sidewalk. One African American man gets on the curb but refuses to be pushed up against the wall of the building; they throw him into the street, and five cops tackle him. As he’s being cuffed, a white kid with a video camera asks him “What’s your name?! What’s your name?!” One of the blue-shirted cops thinks he’s too close and gives him a little shove. A white-shirt sees this, grabs the kid and without hesitation billy-clubs him in the stomach.

At this point, the crowd of twenty or so caught in the orange fence is shouting “Shame! Shame! Who are you protecting?! YOU are the 99 percent! You’re fighting your own people!” A white-shirt, now known to be NYPD Deputy Inspector Anthony Bologna, comes from the left, walks straight up to the three young girls at the front of the crowd, and pepper-sprays them in the face for a few seconds, continuing as they scream “No! Why are you doing that?!” The rest of us in the crowd turn away to avoid the spray, but it’s unavoidable. My left eye burns and goes blind and tears start streaming down my face. Frank grabs my arm and shoves us through the small gap between the orange fence and the brick wall while everyone stares in shock and horror at the two girls on the ground and two more doubled over screaming as their eyes ooze. In the street I shout for water to rinse my eyes or give to the girls on the ground. But no one responds. One of the blue-shirts, tall and bald, stares in disbelief and says, “I can’t believe he just fuckin’ maced her.” And it becomes clear that the white-shirts are a different species. We need to get out of there.
”

-
JEANNE MANSFIELD, “Why I Was Maced at the Wall Street Protest,” in the Boston Review.

So, you’re a Straight Male Gamer playing a Straight Male Character and picking all diplomatic options because you’re such a Nice Guy, and would you look at that! You’re being supportive toward a character, and they attempt to flirt with you because they appreciate your sympathy. There’s only one problem with this. He’s a dude. There is absolutely nothing worse than an unsolicited, unwanted advance! Give me a toggle flag so I don’t have to see this gay shit! Bioware, that was out of line.

Hey, mister Straight Male Gamer? Welcome to [Women’s and people society label women] lives.

Guess what—women have to deal with unwanted advances from straight men constantly, no matter where they are or what they’re doing, and they’re expected to be honored or complimented by them. (If they aren’t, then obviously something is wrong with them, because gosh, who could turn down an lewd offer to ride a handsome straight fella’s station wagon!) Conversations in the real world don’t end in a finished cutscene or some rivalry points, either—women are frequently harassed by dudes that will just not go away unless they get the special attention they think they’re entitled to. But y’know what, it doesn’t always stop at HEY CHECK OUT MY COOL SUNGLASSES WHY AREN’T YOU PAYING ATTENTION TO ME I AM GOING TO ASK YOU TO DANCE AT THIS BAR UNTIL YOU GIVE IN WHAT DO YOU MEAN “NO” YOU’RE AT A BAR SO OBVIOUSLY YOU MADE THE TRIP DOWN HERE JUST TO GET INTO THE GROOVE WITH PRECIOUS OL’ ME! Anders more or less drops it after the first time and still hangs out with you without whining every five seconds about how you put him in the friend zone and telling you how you should stop everything you are doing because he is such a nice guy therefore you should have sex with him and stop chasing after Bad Girls. All you Nice Guys out there that think you’re entitled to have sex with a woman just because you laughed at a few of her jokes and listened to her problems and cry because you got “friend zoned”? This is you, and you are an enormous shitnugget.

In an entirely unrelated issue, I have a shocking piece of information: queer people play video games. The same video games you do. In games where certain aspects of the player controlled character are, in fact, up to the player, most of us don’t think it’s unreasonable to be able to have the same choices you straight dudes have, but on our terms. In a game where there is zero control of the player controlled character (or any characters, period) there is a 99.9% chance that everyone is straight if there is a romance subplot. Do you know what would have happened if there was a rivalry system in either of the Mass Effect games in my mShep playthroughs? Let’s see, I would have pissed off… Ashley, Liara, Miranda, Jack, Kelly and Tali. In my fShep playthroughs, I’ve consistently rejected Kaidan. Matter of fact, there are still female NPCs who give mShep a kiss on the cheek—do you know how awesome it would be for Gianna Parasini to do the same for fShep?

A guy hitting on you in a video game doesn’t make you gay. Matter of fact, I’ve been playing video games for ten years, and a few of them have been full of True Heterosexual Love. I’m still pretty damn gay. I beat Final Fantasy VIII when I was younger, and I didn’t transform into an angsty, teenage lone wolf looking for Rinoa. I’m the same person. So are you. You just got hit on by a guy and you didn’t like it. If Bioware for some ridiculous reason actually caves and gives you assholes a No Homo flag then I had better damn well get a No Hetero one. In the meantime, deal with it and take your rivalry points like the big, strong, manly straight man you are.

And if you’re a straight dude who doesn’t do these things, who isn’t offended by being hit on by a fictional dude, who thinks being inclusive is important and isn’t a douchebag but feels a compelling need to announce this to the world? HERE’S YOUR MEDAL IN ADVANCE. If it doesn’t apply to you then it’s not about you.

there was this quote that went around that was something like “Straight men are so afraid of Gay men because they expect that the gay men will treat them the same way straight men treat women.”
And that’s pretty relevant here.

this is incredibly relevant to everything i am about????

man i really want a “no hetero” toggle for my life

can it just be a “no asshole” toggle, can that work

This commentary is fucking perfect.

Question Yourself

Take something you have a strong belief or conviction about.

Ask yourself why you feel that way.

Ask yourself if you feel that way because of an outside influence.

Ask yourself if it is rational to feel this way.

Question Information

Be wary of the headlines, they’re biased.

Fact check.

Do independent research.

Check sources on everything.

Question Authority

Ask yourself what their motives are.

Don’t let anyone tell you what to believe or how to feel.

Question your emotions

When having an emotional reaction, ask yourself why you react that way.

A few other things.

Be aware of your thoughts, observe them objectively.

Be aware of your “inner monologue” for example, if you beat yourself up ask why.

Stay open minded, try to understand why others are “the way they are”.

Question EVERYTHING, tradition, trends, belief systems and ideologies.

Read up on logic and rationality.
